Soy Wax and Candle Safety Information
I am proud to be using 100% soy wax and lead free cotton wicks for all my candles! My candles are all hand poured by me and are made from soy wax that is:
• made in the USA with domestically grown crops.
• 100% vegetable, made with Pure Soybean oil, guaranteed!
• all NATURAL and biodegradable.
• manufactured meeting FDA standards.
• Kosher Certified.
• NOT tested on animals.
• FREE of palm wax.
• FREE of petroleum, paraffin or beeswax products.
• FREE of pesticides and herbicides.
• FREE of toxic materials.
• FREE of Genetically Modified Material.
• considered GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) under the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.
Traditional wax candles are usually made from paraffin wax which is petroleum-based. When burning these candles they produce carcinogens and black soot polluting the air. Soy wax candles are made from hydrogenated soybean oil. The first major advantage is that soy candles do not emit toxic chemicals into the air like paraffin wax. Soy candles are currently the most environmentally safe candle available! Soybeans are a renewable resource grown right here in the USA by American farmers!
What exactly is Soy Wax?
Soy wax is a vegetable wax made from the oil of soybeans. After harvesting, the beans are cleaned, cracked, de-hulled, and rolled into flakes. The oil is then extracted from the flakes and hydrogenated. The hydrogenation process converts some of the fatty acids in the oil from unsaturated to saturated. This process dramatically alters the melting point of the oil, making it a solid at room temperature. The leftover bean husks are commonly used as animal feed. The U.S. grows the vast majority of the world's soy beans, primarily in Illinois, Iowa, and Indiana.
Also, soy wax burns at a lower temperature than candles made with paraffin wax. This not only makes a healthier environment, but your candle will have longer burn times. Some candles are made with soy-blends and can be called “Soy Candles”. This is a combination of paraffin wax and soy wax and can have as little as 25% soy.
As I stated previously, my candles are made with 100% soy wax!
A few characteristics of Soy Candles
Sometimes frosting (white, chalking marks) can appear on your candle and it is a natural characteristic of soy. This is not a flaw and is strictly unique to PURE soy candles. Soy wax is known to frost just like fine chocolate. It happens because the wax has no added chemicals or preservatives to prevent this! Frosting DOES NOT affect the burn quality of your candle. Through my process of making soy candles, I have tried to minimize frosting as much as I can by altering my pouring temperatures and the environment in which the candles cool. It is almost impossible to completely eliminate the soy from frosting, especially after burning your candle. Even changes in the weather or room temperatures can cause additional frosting. I do not add any “cosmetic” chemicals to stop frosting or fading in my soy wax candles! It’s just one of the unique characteristics of this wonderful natural wax.
Since soybean wax has a lower melting point than paraffin wax, it can release excess fragrance oils. This is usually due to extreme temperature changes due to shipping – i.e. going from a hot environment to a cool environment or vice versa. Sweat from soy candles DOES NOT affect the burn quality of your candle and generally does not show up again after your first burn. For optimum performance of soy candles, please store in a cool area out of in-direct and direct sunlight.
To increase the burn time of your soy wax candles, you should always burn your candle until the entire top becomes liquid wax. If you burn your candle for a short period of time and extinguish it, you will develop what is called a “sink hole”. This is when a candle starts to burn down the center instead of out to the edges and then down. Every time before relighting your candle, make sure to trim the wick down to 1/4 inch. This will keep your flame from getting too large. If your flame begins to flicker or become too large while burning your candle, extinguish the flame, let the wax cool, and trim the wick before relighting.
General Safety for any candle:
• Never leave a burning candle unattended! A lit candle should always be within you sight!
• Keep burning candles away from children and pets.
• Please be sure to remove all ribbons and decorations from your candles before lighting.
• Do not place near flammable objects such as curtains, walls, etc.
• Place on a protected, heat resistant, level surface.
• Keep candle free of wick trimmings, matches, or other foreign matter that could be a fire hazard.
• Avoid burning in drafts.
• Avoid walking with lit candles.
• When candles are richly scented, which mine are, a mushrooming effect may occur on the wick. There is nothing wrong and just a reminder to keep your wicks trimmed.
• ALWAYS keep wick trimmed to 1/4 to 1/2 inch.
• Allow candle to cool before trimming wick or relighting
Container/Jar Candles and Votives:
• To avoid glass containers shattering: Do not burn your candle in a container that is chipped or cracked. Do not allow your candle to burn completely down to the bottom of container, stop about 1/2 inch short. Do not allow flame to touch sides of container.
• Allow your soy candle to burn until the wax pool reaches the sides of the container and has a complete melt pool before extinguishing. If you don`t let your candle wax burn to the edges it will tunnel down the middle and the wick will drown.
• Keep wick trimmed 1/4 to 1/2 inch. Extinguish a candle if it smokes, flickers repeatedly or the flame becomes to high. Cool, trim wick, check for drafts and re-light.
• Never touch or move any soy candle when the wax is still melted.
• Allow candle to cool before replacing lid on jar.
• Container candles & votive containers should be set in a wire holder or on a trivet to protect surfaces from heat. Hot candle jars can damage furniture.
• Votives should be used in a suitable container and an appropriate sized container. The inside of the container should be of similar size to the votive candle. Too wide of a container will leave the liquid wax too far from the flame and excess wax will remain.
• Never leave a burning votive/candle unattended
Soy Melts (Tarts)
• Remove and discard all packaging..
• Use in an approved tart melter or place a soy melt in a well ventilated, tart approved burner without a lid. It should have at least a 2 ½” top opening. Use an unscented tea light candle beneath.
• Electic “potpourri pots” may overheat the wax and are not recommended.
• Do not add water. Never heat on stove or any non-certified tart appliance. Do not allow flame to touch underside of melt pot. Do not heat if pot contains less than 1/2" of wax.
• Never leave a burning tart unattended
